AVERY

I AWAKE to the feel of Noah’s gigantic body wrapped around mine, making me his little spoon. It’s one of my favorite ways to wake up, secure in the warmth and strength of his arms. I thread my fingers through his where his hand rests low on my stomach. I soak up the perfection of the moment with closed eyes. It’s hard to believe I’ll have a lifetime of mornings like this. I wonder if I’ll ever stop being awed by them. I hope not. Noah’s soft breath tickles the top of my head, a more intense sensation since I’ve been keeping my hair so short.

We’re closing in on two years since I told him I loved him. Two years. It’s incredible to think of it. For a kid who didn’t believe he was capable of giving love and definitely wasn’t worthy of receiving it, I’ve been a sponge for all Noah has given me since we first met. Sometimes I still wonder if I give him enough back, but he never complains, even when I have one of my bad days when I feel like that confused kid again. His patience with me never waivers. He’s still perfect, even when he isn’t. I know the man has flaws like the rest of us. He’s occasionally short-tempered and scatter-brained. He forgets how to use the dirty clothes hamper. He has to be prodded to do the dusting and to clean the bathtub. But he’s still the best man I could ever imagine. And by far the best thing about him is how much he loves me. Others might disagree, but I don’t mind. He’s my gentle giant. He’s the one I can lean on at any time without question. He’s the one who props me back up when it’s time. He’s my everything, and I am his.

I slip carefully out of his hold and into the bathroom where I tend to the morning basics before brushing my teeth. I pad into the kitchen in nothing but boxer briefs, something that never would have happened if I hadn’t met Noah, and pour us both a cup of coffee. He’s spoiled with the automatic machine making it for him before he wakes, but I won’t tell him.

I bring them back to the bedroom and his name dies in my throat. I almost make a mess with the coffee with my abrupt stop. Noah has turned over on his back and kicked the covers down to his ankles. He’s hell on sheets but a treat for my eyes. I take in the long length of his muscular legs, both fuzzy with the same dark blond hair that grows so tantalizingly on his rippled belly and the vast expanse of his chest.

His face is relaxed in sleep, a day’s growth of beard shadowing his jaw. His gorgeous blond hair is mussed and spread out like a broken bale of hay across the pillow. One hand reaches for my empty spot in the bed, the other he has buried fingers deep beneath the waistband of his boxers.
